Advertising your Garage Sale with lawn signs
June 5, 2003
If you are planning to hold a garage sale, this is the latest information available on advertising signs. On May 1, 2003 The City Council of Winnipeg passed a new by-law that regulates the placement and size of temporary signs on public property. This is what was published in the mid May edition of the Lance newspaper by Councillor Gord Steeves.
- No signs are allowed on centre medians or traffic islands anywhere in the city.
- No signs are allowed within 30 metres of an intersection.
- No signs are allowed within 30 metres of a turning / deceleration / acceleration or traffic storage lane.
- No signs are to be placed within 2 metres of a curb or traveled edge of street or within ½ metre of the edge of a sidewalk or within 5 metres of a driveway.
- The name and phone number of the person / firm responsible for placement of the sign, and the date the sign was placed must be displayed on the face of each sign.
- No sign (except garage sale signs and election signs) will be displayed longer than 14 consecutive days or more than 24 hours following the day any event identified on the sign concludes.
- Garage sale sign must not be displayed earlier than the day prior to the date of the garage sale.
- No signs shall be supported by the string, rope, wire or metal stakes.
- No signs shall be greater than 0.6 square metres in size nor have a height greater than 1 metre as measured from existing grade to top of sign.
- No sign shall be attached to, supported by, or obstruct a traffic directional sign and cannot be electrified, flash, spin or rotate.
- Also no signs of any kind are allowed on Bishop Grandin Blvd between Kenaston Blvd and Lagimodiere Blvd.
Please try to follow these guide lines when advertising your garage sales. We would not want the wrath of the City to blemish one of our fine neighbourhood events. Happy sales this summer.
