Southglen Bridge to go Ahead January 20, 2003 The Riel Community Committee voted unanimously on Dec 17th to sanction the construction of a Seine River crossing at a point where Southglen intersects with St. Anne's Road. It will be a low speed, two lane roadway, that will feature a clear span across the river so as not to impede wildlife or canoes from passing underneath. Just as importantly, it will also allow a secondary means of entrance that is critical to our community. As mentioned in previous articles, costs for this new bridge will be borne by Ladco, and we have every confidence that, given their track record, it will be an attractive as well as useful improvement. The three councillors sitting on the committee, Dan Vandal, Gord Steeves, & John Angus heard numerous presentations during the course of the marathon five hour meeting, including several from representatives of your Royalwood Neighbourhood Association. Fears of increase traffic on The St. Anne's side of the River were allayed, when traffic experts reported that studies indicated that in excess of 90% of the traffic flowing east to west across the new bridge will turn either North or South, rather than proceeding down Southglen. Perhaps one of the most persuasive comments came from Mr. Peter Kaufmann, former mayoral candidate, who questioned why the issue was being addressed again, since Council had approved The Southglen Solution more than a decade ago, after exhaustive study, and during his tenure as a City Councillor. In the opinion of The RNA the right decision was reached, - a decision that will have long term benefits for our residents and one that will have extremely minimal impact on The Bois des Esprits Forest that borders The Seine River. Nevertheless, as Greg Lofvendal stated in his letter of congratulations to Councillors after the vote,.. "Sadly, over the last year this issue has taken on the aspect of a bitter contest that has harbored hard feelings and pitted neighbour against neighbour". Now it's time to move on, and mend fences. The Save our Seine Organization has done tremendous work cleaning up the river over the past years, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for that service. It is the understanding of your RNA, that Ladco will begin construction of the new lakes immediately, and construction of Royalwood Phase II will commence this coming Spring.
